Zero One Node, a validator supporting numerous blockchains across ecosystems like Cosmos, Solana, and Near, was represented in a recent Citizen Web3 podcast by its CTO Chris, Community Manager and Lead Marketer Faith, and Project Lead Tayo. The team shared insights into their operational philosophy, technical prowess, community engagement strategies, and overarching vision for the decentralized space. Chris, as CTO, highlighted Zero One Node's unique technical foundation, emphasizing, "one of our greatest points is that we run with our own infrastructure. We have two data centers, our own servers, our own bare metals, we have a virtualization platform, and we can scale depending on what the networks are asking." This proprietary infrastructure means technical constraints rarely dictate which networks they support; rather, their decisions are driven by genuine interest in a project's vision and its potential for development. From a technical standpoint, Chris noted Solana as the "greatest monster of them all," consuming significant resources, yet affirmed their capability to provide quality services. Faith, in her dual role, underscored the critical importance of community. She elaborated on their user-centric approach, stating, "the people you're trying to reach out to... need to understand that you really care about them." This translates into offering appealing benefits such as competitive commission fees, ensuring "delegators to really earn very well," and maintaining a highly responsive community. Zero One Node also focuses on making services user-friendly, providing guides and tutorials to onboard new users seamlessly into staking and delegating. Faith articulated an ambitious mission: "to onboard at least a billion users... to show passive income," positioning staking as a key component of this. Tayo, overseeing projects and partnerships, revealed Zero One Node's criteria for selecting networks to validate. He stressed the importance of a protocol's vision, mission, and "real life utility." They meticulously research the team, evaluate the Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and seek projects demonstrating "superior user experience, UX, superior advantages compared to Web2 products." Beyond innovation, a clear path towards "generating revenue, generating profits" is essential, as they seek partners with a well-defined long-term projection. The discussion also touched upon the broader services Zero One Node provides. Beyond validating, they act as a guardian in bridges like Wormhole, necessitating robust, secure RPCs and stringent security maintenance across all connected networks. Chris noted, "From a security point of view, I say we were a little exaggerated. We do more than it's required. We have fail safes, we have high availability, we have redundancy." They are also reputable node operators for Chainlink and actively invest in promising blockchain projects. Addressing market downturns like the Luna crash, Tayo described Zero One Node's proactive response. They provided comprehensive support to Terra users, continued validating on Terra Classic, and actively participated in proposals to help the community recover. Through medium articles and consistent updates, they emphasized security practices and user safeguarding. Faith added that such events have only made them stronger, reinforcing their "futuristic in its approach" stance regarding security, community, and decentralization. A core tenet of Zero One Node’s technical philosophy, particularly emphasized by Chris, is the prioritization of security over perfect uptime. The team, composed of experienced IT professionals with extensive backgrounds in sysadmin, network administration, and security engineering, designs infrastructure with security at its forefront. This includes a multi-signer setup with three to five signers located in a highly private, secure network, which must achieve consensus for block signing. While this sophisticated security measure, including geographically dispersed data centers and a special secure room for signers, may occasionally lead to missed blocks or slightly lower uptime, Chris firmly stated, "We prefer to have 99.9 uptime instead of 100 and be secure than having 100 uptime and be unsecured." He posited that "a validator that has 80% uptime and it's very secure is better than a validator with 100% uptime with only one node." This position challenges the common perception that 100% uptime is the ultimate metric for validators, arguing that security offers a more fundamental value. Looking ahead, Tayo revealed plans to launch an Ethereum staking pool in collaboration with SSB (shared security validator technology). This initiative aims to democratize ETH staking by removing high entry barriers for retail users, utilizing a multi-sig like environment for enhanced security. The origins of Zero One Node trace back six or seven years to its CEO, Claudiu, who, as Chris explained, "really, really liked the idea of blockchain... he saw the potential and he put all his efforts into making this work." The team’s enthusiasm for "technical confrontations" and a desire to help the community realize blockchain's potential were key motivators. They are active in validating testnets, seeing them as crucial for developers to iterate and improve projects. Chris also highlighted their willingness to "invest in projects that are very attractive" even if they foresee potential failure, believing that "failing makes you better." This philosophy of learning from failures, both their own and others' in the market, continuously informs their security enhancements and operational strategies. In essence, Zero One Node positions itself as a technically robust, community-focused, and security-driven validator committed to the long-term vision of a decentralized Web3. Their operations are built on proprietary bare-metal infrastructure, a deep understanding of security best practices, and a user-centric approach to foster a thriving ecosystem for delegators and project founders alike.
